How to Build a Fire Pit 1. Fire Pit Location
Pick a location away from trees, buildings, and anything else that can burn. Also, make sure you pick a spot that is free of any underground wires. 2. Making a Circle
Drive a stake into the ground where you want the center of your firepit to be. Then tie a piece of string to the stake and about 1 1/2 or 2 feet away attach a stick or nail to the string. This is going to be the outside edge of your firepit. Using that trace a line in the ground all the way around in a circle
Alternatively, you can buy a pre-made fire pit ring and skip this step. 3. Digging
Time to dig out everything inside the circle you just made. Dig it about a foot deep all the way across. Then, in the very center of the pit dig a smaller hole about a foot across down another foot. The center of your firepit should be 2 feet deep. Note, if you deal with alot of rain or generally have a 'wet' yard - dig this center hole even deeper. This is where water will be drainig out of your firepit when it rains. 4. Gravel
Put about 4 inches of gravel into the hole at the outer edge and fill the hole in the middle. Do this so the gravel is level across the entire pit. 5. Sand
Add about 3 inches of sand on top of the gravel. 6. Surrounding The Pit
If you have a firepit ring this step isn't so important and you already have the surrounding. Otherwise - brick is the way to go. Add at least 2 row of bricks stacked on top of one another. Dry stack them together if possible as this will allow you to replace the bricks in the future easier. Adhesives should be avoided as the heat could melt them - potentially giving off dangerous fumes or being flammable. 7. Add Wood
Add some wood, a flame, and kick back and relax at a job well done. |
